Chennai (Capital city of Tamilnadu state in India) basically has rail and road way, the water body which was used as a public transport during british period is no more, the water bodies were successfully converted into sewage canals by our beloved chennaites.
So, a tourist coming onto chennai will either land at airport, Train station or Bus stand.
The chennai Airport is at a place called Meenambakkam, and there are two train stations in chennai, the central and egmore. The central station connects chennai with rest of India, while the egmore station connects chennai with rest of tamil nadu. There is a single bus terminus called CMBT (Chennai Moffussil Bus Terminus) located at a place called Koyembedu in chennai, which connect chennai with rest of tamilnadu and other adjacent states, that is buses are available to Bangalore, Hyderabad, Trivandrum.
The Bus terminus, airport and the train stations are located quite far away from each other.
When you reach chennai by airport, your best option is to hire a prepaid Taxi at the airport exit area, the rates are fixed by government,
and If you reach chennai by train, then you do have a option of using the suburban train service and If you are arriving by bus to chennai, then there is a option of getting city bus to your destination.
For those foreigners coming to chennai for the first time, you should be ready for surprises with our trains, as you will not able to see any amount of cleanliness and hygiene at the stations as well as trains. but the train service will be punctual.
Buses is chennai are bound to get delayed by traffic, if you are travelling through the city between corners, then expect to lose half of your day, although traffic will be little lesser during offpeak (10:00 to 16:00 hrs)
Always keep vigil and carefull during your stay in chennai, and theres lot to explore in chennai as well as in my blog...
